Hardwood floors can provide a warm and beautiful look in your Pleasanton home. However, hardwood flooring requires regular care to keep its natural beauty shining through the years. A lack of maintenance can cause a range of problems, including warped boards. An important factor that contributes to buckling hardwood is the changing humidity and temperatures, such as can be found in Pleasanton’s temperate Mediterranean climate. Luckily, there are several ways to save warped flooring depending on the amount of present damage.
Pressure to Eliminate Tiny Warps
If you see a small warp on the board and just can’t live with it, you can try to straighten out the warp with a little water and pressure. Carefully wet the surface of the warp and place something heavy on top, such as a cinder block. The cinder block’s weight may flatten the warp back into place.
Sanding for Curled Edges or Larger Warps
If the board is warped in the middle or has curled edges, you can try to sand out the buckling and warps. The amount of sanding that is needed will be based on the severity of the warp or buckling. You also have to check the thickness of the board. If the wood floor has been sanded previously, then you may not be able to remove as much as you desire. It’s highly recommended you consult with a flooring professional before you undertake this kind of project!
Nail Down Lifted Ends
If you are dealing with a hardwood floor where the boards have lifted at the ends, you can nail them back into place. Using a technique called face nailing, you can place in a nail so that the board becomes attached to the subflooring underneath. Since the top of the nail can be seen, it is normally reserved for boards along the outermost edges of the room. If you don’t mind seeing the nails along the boards, you can do it at any area along the wood flooring. It’s important to know that attempting to nail down a board with too much curvature could result in the formation of cracks.
Just because the hardwood has become warped doesn’t mean that you have to replace the entire floor. Try out these solutions to save your hardwood flooring.
